Migration guide

From Slack to EU Chat: the planned process

Here's how a migration is meant to work in four weeks. The importer for Slack is in preparation and hasn't been built yet. We'll add real-world experience from actual migrations as soon as it exists.

Week 1: trial run

Request an export from Slack, import it into an empty workspace. Check the result: channels, threads, files, mentions. If something's off, the trial run is discarded and repeated.

Week 2: parallel operation

Both systems run side by side. New channels only get created in EU Chat from now on. A note in the old channel points to the new location.

Week 3: moving habits over

The bigger effort is rarely technical. Integrations need to be reconnected, and everyone has to set up their notifications again. Plan half an hour per team for this.

Week 4: cutover

One last import catches up on the changes since the trial run. Set the old system to read-only rather than cancelling it straight away. Having access to the archive is reassuring.
